Oscar bait.  That sums up this movie.  I’m sure it’s a good movie, but you don’t hire Helen Mirren, Christopher Plummer and Paul Giamatti without the Oscars on your mind.  Also the fact that it’s about the drama in Leo Tolstoy’s personal life doesn’t hurt.  I won’t pretend that I know anything about Tolstoy, but War & Peace is somewhere on my list of books to read (sure it is).

And look it’s Octavia of the Julii.

This movie is looking very good.  I wonder what’s going to happen at the Oscars this year.  When Chicago was nominated and won almost all of the Oscars back in 2002 people were shocked.  I was happy, but I wonder if people will give this movie much of a chance.  To say it’s similar to Chicago is an understatement, it relies on most of the same sets, costumes and characters.  I don’t think that’s a bad thing, I loved Chicago, but I hope everyone else remembers how good it was rather than how it didn’t deserve the Oscar.

Regarding the casting, I just heard some really unfortunate news.  The role that went to Nicole Kidman was originally supposed to go to Catherine Zeta Jones.  That would have been better.  I’d rather watch Chicago than Moulin Rouge, any day.  The rest of the cast seems quite good.  Kate Hudson stands out as the most American, least versatile of all the actresses (I don’t count Fergie as an actress), that could be why they gave her this trailer.  About Fergie, you have to admit that she was cast well as a dirty whore.  I hear that Penelope Cruz is going to mask her accent for this movie to make it more Italian.  I’m thrilled, I hate her real accent.  Marion Cotillard is likely going to do the best in this film.  I believe that because she looks like the least assertive out of all these women but you know she’s going to have the best voice and probably be the most likable.  If you saw Public Enemies you know how good she is.  That movie is full of ridiculousness, but she was amazing.

I really don’t know what to call this.  It’s probably a trailer, but it acts like a teaser.  There’s no dialogue and after watching it you’ll probably have no idea what the movie is about (besides Oscar nominations).  But this is likely a trailer.

This trailer (and the movie) is about getting Colin Firth and Julian Moore Oscars.  We can pretend that it’s an art house movie, or perhaps a passion project from the director Tom Ford.  But for those of us who aren’t in L.A. or New York or Venice or Cannes this is simply a beautifully shot movie that will likely win some Oscars.  I don’t think that these two don’t deserve Academy Awards, I absolutely love Julianne Moore.  I’m quite indifferent towards Colin Firth (mostly because I’m not a 30 year old woman, I have heard that “that man can wear a sweater”, but he just seems to play the same grim character in all his movies.  Maybe that’s the point, maybe this movie is supposed to change that.

I have to say that this is probably the best looking trailer I’ve seen in quite some time.  I probably won’t see the movie, it’ll be very hard to find a theatre that will show it, but the trailer is visually spectacular.

A Single Man 01

I actually never posted the original teaser or the first trailer for The Road.  I have been keeping track of this movie, but it’s just taken sooo long to come out.  It was supposed to come out last fall, but apparently someone didn’t have confidence in the movie.  So they delayed it until March or something.  Now they’ve regained confidence in the film and it’s being released this fall for the next Oscars.  Here’s hoping this doesn’t happen again.

I tried to read this book.  My cousin insisted that I read it, she said it was extremely emotional.  So I gave it a try.  I didn’t get far.  I can handle tragedies, they’re great, but I guess I need poetic tragedy.  This apocalyptic, unending tragedy is just too much.  So I didn’t get through the book.  I still want to see the movie.  I figure I can handle an hour or three of sadness.

Very interesting stuff.  Cracks is a new movie directed by Jordan Scott.  Never heard of her?  Probably you’ve heard of her father, Ridley Scott.  Those are some big shoes.

But on to this movie.  It looks like a lot of fun.  I loooove Eva Green, she could just glare at the screen for an hour or two and I’d pay to watch.  This movie is about a boarding school with a very influential teach, played by Eva Green.  The girls are completely devoted to her and she to them until an Spanish exchange student comes in and steals all the attention.  You’ll probably understand the story better once you actually watch the trailer.  The operative word about this movie should be ‘intrigue’.

The acting looks like it’s going to be very good.  Eva Green is always good, and it’ll be awesome to see her as a delusional villain.  Juno Temple has an infinitely interesting face, and mix that with that crazy hair and she looks like a very fun character.  This new Spanish girl is amazingly beautiful.

Avatar is probably the most epic-est movie ever made.  James Cameron finally decided to capitalize on the outrageous success of Titanic and make the movie he’s always wanted to make.  This is that movie.  I honestly couldn’t care less about the story, what I care about is how it looks.  This looks to be the most beautiful movie ever made.  It has the most impressive effects work ever.  And it’s all in 3D.  I know 3D has been around forever, but only with a budget like this one will 3D be seen to it’s full effect.

[UPDATE: Empire posted a wonderful scene-by-scene analysis of the trailer.  Check it out here.]

I just posted this trailer because of the cast, it looks moderately funny, but how can you resist Mery Streep, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin.

This is a Peter Jackson movie.  I’ve been very concerned about this movie for quite some time.  It was announced years an years ago, after King Kong was made.  I had my doubts about Peter Jackson making anything that resembled a modern drama.  I don’t know why but I figured he couldn’t handle normalcy.  After seeing this trailer I think I can put aside those doubts.  He definitely didn’t aim for a normal setting.  It appears as though this is an intense drama with some serious fantasy elements.  I think this story will be very hard for the general public to accept, having a film partially set in an amazing looking after-life will be hard to fathom.  But I’m sure most of you, those of you with good taste, will be able to accept the unrealistic with the realistic.

On a side note, they got two very emotionally intense actresses in this movie, Susan Sarandon and Rachel Weisz are amazing actresses, and I’m sure they’ll get me crying.  The girl who plays the main character is also quite good.  I obviously haven’t seen her in a lot of movies, but she was good in City of Ember and Death Defying Acts and I hear she was good in Atonement.  Mark Wahlberg was an interesting choice, I hope he doesn’t go too over the top with his performance.  He was actually a second choice, Ryan Gosling was supposed to play that role.  And then there’s Stanley Tucci, he’s going to be freakifying.
