I actually never posted the original teaser or the first trailer for The Road.  I have been keeping track of this movie, but it’s just taken sooo long to come out.  It was supposed to come out last fall, but apparently someone didn’t have confidence in the movie.  So they delayed it until March or something.  Now they’ve regained confidence in the film and it’s being released this fall for the next Oscars.  Here’s hoping this doesn’t happen again.

I tried to read this book.  My cousin insisted that I read it, she said it was extremely emotional.  So I gave it a try.  I didn’t get far.  I can handle tragedies, they’re great, but I guess I need poetic tragedy.  This apocalyptic, unending tragedy is just too much.  So I didn’t get through the book.  I still want to see the movie.  I figure I can handle an hour or three of sadness.

I am very unsure about this movie.  When I first watched the teaser I had a lot of hope.  It looked like a Harry Potter knock-off with Greek mythological characters instead of witches and wizards.  Sounds good, right?  Then I read the book.

Whew, the book is truly awful.  Granted it wasn’t written for adults, but technically neither was Harry Potter.  Honestly though, this book is terrible no matter how young you are.  I now have no intention of reading more of the books.

After I read the book I watched the teaser again and discovered that despite the terrible book the movie might still hold some promise.  Then they released this trailer.  Now I’m back on the ban wagon.  As long as the director and the screen-writers really change the story then this could be a good movie.  So this isn’t a full endorsement, I am not behind this movie, but I will say that it looks significantly better than the book.

I’m slowly catching up on my trailers.  I watch a lot of trailers and make a lot of notes about which ones I like.  I try to post them as soon as I watch them, but at times I watch unfinished trailers, some without posters, some without titles.  And then I forget about trailers.  This is one of those trailers

This movie seems to be a western about two little kids who are abandoned on their little homestead.  Quite awful, kinda like the Blue Lagoon… but way better, and without the awkward sex. Also there seems to be something behind the attic door.  That should probably add to the tension.

I’m quite sure that I won’t enjoy watching this movie.  As I recall, the portion of Babel where the kids are alone in the desert almost killed me, that was way too stressful.  This is a movie all about that.  It’s going to be rough.  I still want to watch it, but it’s definitely going to be an experience.

I just wanted to add that the scene where the parents are driving away (presumably) and the kids are chasing.  That was beautifully done.

This is another attempt by Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer to create another Pirates of the Caribean type franchise.  This is probably their best bet.  This one is based on the series of games.  The games have always been very popular and for good reason.  Ubisoft has never let the game get old.  They keep on refreshing the series.  The newest game was totally different, light on story, but heavy on style.  This movie seems to have borrowed the style from the newest game and the story from the best game.  The trailer explains the story, it seems quite different from the game, but that’s not a bad thing (there are more humans in the movie).

The cast seems quite good.  I was very concerned when I heard that Jake Gyllenhaal was going to play the prince.  But once they started releasing pictures of him my worries were gone.  I was very excited when I heard that Gemma Arterton was playing the other lead.  I loved her in James Bond, even if she was only in for a few seconds.  Ben Kingsley will make an interesting villain, hopefully he doesn’t overdo it.

I figured it out!  I figured out why people have been so standoffish about supporting this movie.  It’s the Uncanny Valley.  I won’t pretend that I knew much about this crazy theory, I heard about it in a 30 Rock episode.  It essentially says that humans are ok with robots, cartoons, and some CGI, but there’s a point when we feel a subconscious dislike for something that appears real but isn’t.  Here’s how it was explained to me:

Tracy: Tell it to me in Star Wars.
Frank: Alright. We like R2D2 and C3PO.
Tracy: They’re nice.
Frank: And up here, we have a real person like Han Solo.
Tracy: He acts like he doesn’t care, but he does!
Frank: But down here we have a CGI Storm Trooper or Tom Hanks in the Polar Express.
Tracy: I’m scared! Get me out of there.

I think that Avatar is stuck down in the uncanny valley.  But don’t worry, you can overcome your natural dislike for realistic unreality… right?

But let’s discuss this trailer.  It incorporates a lot more of the story and appears to be quite complicated.  I don’t fully understand who’s on which side or what Sigourney Weaver’s job is.  But we shall see.  By the way, who wasn’t impressed with John Cameron’s career?  I always forget about how many successful movies he’s made.  Not that I actually like his movies, but he must be extremely rich.

Sorry about the strange picture, but there are only two posters for Avatar, and I already used the good one.  Click on this oddly shaped picture to watch the trailer.

The Prisoner looks like a movie; it has an extremely high quality production value, it stars two talented movie stars, it has an epic scope; but it’s really a mini-series.  This miniseries is brought to you by AMC the dark horse that brought you Mad Men.  And following AMC’s recent pattern, it’s sure to win all the awards at the Emmy’s next year.

It’s supposedly a remake of an old BBC mini-series.  I know nothing of that.  The story appears to be a very familiar sci-fi story.   A regular man wakes up in a dystopian society lacking in emotion and with an emphasis on conformity.  I don’t know which sci-fi fallback I like more, dystopian nightmares or robotic uprisings.  In the end they’re both the same, they both have a twist at the end (or in the beginning), and they both have slightly tragic compromising endings, but I think the dystopian version allows for more creativity.

Anyways, back to this mini-series.  These two actors will be a lot of fun to watch, they’re both extremely good actors (poor Mr. Caviezel will always be known as Jesus).  The locations look beautiful.  For some reason that balloon looks quite exciting.  I have no idea how it fits into the storyline, but it looks interesting.

I don’t usually post TV-Spots on this blog, there are usually just too many, and if I start posting them I might never stop.  Plus they’re usually just shortened versions of the trailer.  Buuut, Where the Wild Things is going to be my favorite movie this year so I’ll make an exception.  Also there have been an extraordinary amount of TV-Spots for this movie.

And just for the fun of it I’m going to post the rest of the Where the Wild Things Posters.  Apparently a lot of people have used my blog to get posters, that’s fine with me (probably it isn’t fine with the other sites where I get the posters from.)

This trailer isn’t terribly different than the last trailer, but I think it does a better job at selling the movie.  The CGI looks amazing.  Heath Ledger is still front and center, and I’m still worried that people will raise their expectations a little too high because of these trailers.  But I guess Terry Gilliam has to do something to get people to watch his movies.

Agora’s looking like it’s going to be my second favorite movie of the year.  It’s a perfect storm of interesting things.  I am in love with all things Roman, Greek and Egyptian, naturally Alexandria is one of my favorite historical settings.  I love religious conflicts like the one in this film, and as a good Christian I naturally root for the Pagans.  The two stars are wonderful.   The Fountain is one of my favorite movies ever, and Rachel Weisz is a big part of the reason why I loved the movie.  She’s just so earnest and lovable.  Max Minghella looks like he’s going to be a good actor too.  Likely he’s always going to be referred to as his fathers son, but I think he’s going to be in some great movies in the future.

A few weeks ago I noticed that I posted the first trailer to this movie almost a year ago and then forgot about it.  I wondered whether I had been wrong about the movie, perhaps it wasn’t as good as I first though.  But then I watched this new trailer.  It still looks great.  Although I should admit that I am consistantly tricked by over-saturated period movies all the time.
