Now that we have a brief respite between Twilight movies let’s take a look at a good vampire movie.  This trailer isn’t too different from the first trailer, but that’s alright, probably you never watched that one anyways.  Here’s the rundown on the plot.  The vampires have taken over the world and they’re running out of humans.  But secretly the humans are building resistence cells.  Also there’s a cure for the vampires.  Add that to some gloriously good cinematography and some good actors and I think we have an exciting movie.

This movie is looking better and better.  I’m still not excited about the American setting, but I’ll live with it.  The cast is looking great.  Uma Thurman looks pretty outrageous.  I don’t look forward to Pierce Brosnan’s transformation.  Rosario Dawson is looking great, I wish she got better roles, it seems like she doesn’t get in enough good movies.  The kids look OK, I can imagine that the girl is going to reach a Hermione level of annoying very quickly.

Another trailer, more story.  I don’t really have anything more to say about this one.  The cast is glorious and the sets are amazing.  I’m not one for horror movies or thrillers, but this looks very good.

This is an “international trailer”,  in other words the subtitles are in another language, in this case french.

This teaser really misrepresents this movie, or at least the comic-book.  I’m not saying this is a bad teaser, but there’s no doubt that the movie will be significantly more gory and hard-core.

But on to the story.  This is based on a very, very new comic book series about a teenage kid who is bored and depressed (what a unique teenager) so he decides that he should become a superhero.  Things don’t go well, he get’s destroyed.  This comic doesn’t hold back, it may at times look like a comedy, but when people are getting beat-up or killed it doesn’t edit anything.  I hear that the movie does the same thing, and I hope that’s true.  But until we get a red-band trailer we’ll just have to hope.

When I was quite young I rented the old Clash of the Titans movie (it released sometime close to Star Wars).  I expected it to be a classic campy fantasy movie.  It was pretty awful.  I’m all for old-fashion special effects, but come on.  It wasn’t the classic it was made out to be.  This version looks better.  Granted this trailer is nothing more than a testosterone filled Hollywood version of a music video, but I’m sure the movie will be better.  It’s undoubtedly a big budget action movie, but it has some serious talent and shouldn’t be ignored as a 300 copycat (although that wouldn’t be the worst thing, 300 was a lot of fun).

And yes, I rolled my eyes too when the line “Titans Will Crash” came on the screen.

Salt is an interesting movie.  I starting having doubts about it when Tom Cruise dropped out of the project and Angelina Jolie was recast in the lead.  Objectively that should be good.  I don’t like Tom Cruise and I do like Angelina Jolie, but it concerns me that a script can be so casually and drastically changed.  Beyond that craziness this film looks like some simple, mindless fun.  It doesn’t look as bad as Wanted, but it’s hardly going to be one the most exciting movies next year (for me).  I do want to know what happens, and I guess that’s the point of the trailer.  By all accounts it looks like she’s quite guilty, but that’s going to be pretty hard to sustain throughout the whole movie.  There have got to be some serious twists.  We shall see.

For some reason it seems like people are losing faith in this movie.  The excitement level has gone down fast.  Regardless, I’m still excited.  We have to remember that this is a Guy Ritchie movie, he has so many twists planned that he’s probably only showing us clips from the first quarter of the movie.

One thing that I was confused about in this trailer was Rachel McAdams accent, she seems to be a full blown Canadian in the film.  Interesting.  She probably could have managed a slight accent, we’re already going to have to listen to Robert Downey Jr. the whole film.  How bad can she be?  Anyways, the cast looks quite good.  I still don’t know who Mark Strong is, but that hardly matters.

I am very unsure about this movie.  When I first watched the teaser I had a lot of hope.  It looked like a Harry Potter knock-off with Greek mythological characters instead of witches and wizards.  Sounds good, right?  Then I read the book.

Whew, the book is truly awful.  Granted it wasn’t written for adults, but technically neither was Harry Potter.  Honestly though, this book is terrible no matter how young you are.  I now have no intention of reading more of the books.

After I read the book I watched the teaser again and discovered that despite the terrible book the movie might still hold some promise.  Then they released this trailer.  Now I’m back on the ban wagon.  As long as the director and the screen-writers really change the story then this could be a good movie.  So this isn’t a full endorsement, I am not behind this movie, but I will say that it looks significantly better than the book.

This is another attempt by Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer to create another Pirates of the Caribean type franchise.  This is probably their best bet.  This one is based on the series of games.  The games have always been very popular and for good reason.  Ubisoft has never let the game get old.  They keep on refreshing the series.  The newest game was totally different, light on story, but heavy on style.  This movie seems to have borrowed the style from the newest game and the story from the best game.  The trailer explains the story, it seems quite different from the game, but that’s not a bad thing (there are more humans in the movie).

The cast seems quite good.  I was very concerned when I heard that Jake Gyllenhaal was going to play the prince.  But once they started releasing pictures of him my worries were gone.  I was very excited when I heard that Gemma Arterton was playing the other lead.  I loved her in James Bond, even if she was only in for a few seconds.  Ben Kingsley will make an interesting villain, hopefully he doesn’t overdo it.

I figured it out!  I figured out why people have been so standoffish about supporting this movie.  It’s the Uncanny Valley.  I won’t pretend that I knew much about this crazy theory, I heard about it in a 30 Rock episode.  It essentially says that humans are ok with robots, cartoons, and some CGI, but there’s a point when we feel a subconscious dislike for something that appears real but isn’t.  Here’s how it was explained to me:

Tracy: Tell it to me in Star Wars.
Frank: Alright. We like R2D2 and C3PO.
Tracy: They’re nice.
Frank: And up here, we have a real person like Han Solo.
Tracy: He acts like he doesn’t care, but he does!
Frank: But down here we have a CGI Storm Trooper or Tom Hanks in the Polar Express.
Tracy: I’m scared! Get me out of there.

I think that Avatar is stuck down in the uncanny valley.  But don’t worry, you can overcome your natural dislike for realistic unreality… right?

But let’s discuss this trailer.  It incorporates a lot more of the story and appears to be quite complicated.  I don’t fully understand who’s on which side or what Sigourney Weaver’s job is.  But we shall see.  By the way, who wasn’t impressed with John Cameron’s career?  I always forget about how many successful movies he’s made.  Not that I actually like his movies, but he must be extremely rich.

Sorry about the strange picture, but there are only two posters for Avatar, and I already used the good one.  Click on this oddly shaped picture to watch the trailer.
